Bizarre.
Jude and I found what would appear to be a Rhinoceros Beetle while walking home from school (The image in that link is the spitting image of the one we found). Now, I'm pretty sure beetles of the scarab family aren't generally native to the British Isles, so we popped him in Jude's pencil case and bought him home to save him freezing to death or getting run over by a car (which he very nearly did before we got him). He's now in an empty fish tank with a jamjar lid of water, some leaves and half a banana.

Apparently, these things can be kept as pets, but I wouldn't have the faintest clue how to do that, so I think if he survives the night, I might see if I can find a local bug expert and maybe give him to a zoo or something.

What a fucking wierd thing to happen though.

[info]spikeylady's probably the best person to ask. If you can get over the sighs of 'loooooovely buuug!'

Ahh, good point. I'll try and get some decent pictures of it (assuming it survives the night), but if I can't she's welcome to come down and have a look first hand :)

About 1 and a quarter inches long. Appears to be female, so doesn't have the massive horn of awesomeness, but it's still a very very cool bug :)

So far we've been calling it the Massive Bug of Awesomeness, but I think we'll need to shorten it to something.

Yeah, he's very pleased. When I told him it might not be legal to keep it, he asked if when we took it to the zoo, we could adopt it, because you can do that even with little bugs in zoos, apparently ;)

The internet is failing me, but I think they are native to the UK, if rare. The only one I've ever seen was in the south of France, though.

Very cool indeed.

Excellent, if that's the case then hopefully there's a breeder or an expert somewhere local who can tell me how to look after it :)

Not exactly - our fellow doesn't have the ridged back. Not sure if that makes a difference :)

Cool! Though are you sure it's not a female stag beetle?

Not sure at all, no. Hence why I'll be trying to find a bug person to come look at it early next week :)
