One for the smokers/ex-smokers on my flist.

So, for a long time I've been aware of a method of making a lighter work if it's playing up or running low - I'm sure some of you have seen it - which involves clicking ones fingers over the lighter once, then sparking the flint again. It's *always* worked. I thought there was some hidden element to it, a way by which gentlemen could impress a lady by seeming to perform a magic trick on the lighter and thus making all her troubles vanish.

Recently, I tried doing it. No tricks, no magic, just clicking my fingers over a lighter that had failed to light previously. And it worked. It has worked on all but one occasion out of a possible 20 times or so, and on that occasion, I used my off-hand, rather than the hand that had been attempting to catch the spark up until now.

So now I'm completely baffled. I don't know why it works, I have no clues or suspicions at all. Does anyone actually know the physical reason why this trick works?
